10 Cheap Space Saving Ideas for Apartment Dwellers

One of the biggest challenges many apartment dwellers face is staying organized in a small space. There are a number of ways you can easily –and cheaply—make the most of what little space you have so you can live comfortably. Here are 10 space saving products and ideas to help you declutter that won’t break the bank.

1. Store Things on the Back of Doors

The back of a door is a great place to use for storing household items like towels, belts, jewelry, ties, or other accessories, which might otherwise be difficult to find a place for. There are a number of hanging products designed for this purpose that you can simply hang on the top of the door.

2. Use Space Under The Bed

The biggest piece of furniture in an apartment is typically the bed, and the space underneath it is extremely valuable for storage. If you aren’t able to invest in a bed with built-in drawers, there are still ways to make the most of this space. Bins with wheels on the bottom can store out-of-season clothes or household items that aren’t used frequently, and can slide out for easy access. Vacuum-sealed storage bags are also ideal for storing bulky items. Both of these options are relatively inexpensive.

3. Hang Things from Cupboards

Obviously you can store things inside kitchen cupboards, but you can also hang items from underneath top cupboards. There are products available that make it possible to hang anything from mugs, to stemware, to paper towel rolls. If you’re worried about the nuisance of installation, you can use a product that easily clips on to the bottom of the cupboard.

4. Over-the-Sink Cutting Board

This is a must-have product for anyone who has limited counter space. You can find them in a number of materials, and some, like the one pictured above, include strainers.

5. Couch Arm Wrap

There’s no need to use valuable floor space with an end table when your sofa arm can serve the same purpose. Before you purchase a couch arm wrap, be sure to measure the width of your sofa arm to ensure a proper fit.

6.  Space Saving Closet Hangers

Cascading hangers take up the same amount of space as a single hanger but store more clothing. They’re a quick and inexpensive way to make the most of limited closet space.

7.  Take Advantage of Vertical Closet Space

If you hang all of your short-hanging items together, you can make space available underneath the closet rod that can be used for drawers or shelving.

8. Opt for Furniture with Storage

A coffee table with space for storage underneath, or end tables with drawers can go a long way when it comes to storage.

9. Purge Clothing or Household Items You Don’t Need

If you haven’t worn an article of clothing in a year, chances are you won’t wear it again. Use your judgement when it comes to household items that you feel you don’t need, or haven’t used in a while. Selling or donating these items can make room for items you do use.

10. Take Advantage of Wall-space

Wall-space is not only useful for displaying artwork—it can be very useful for storage. Install bars and use S-hooks to hang kitchen tools, like pots and pans, or install a magnetic knife rack to save counter space. Take advantage of vertical space by stacking bars from floor to ceiling.

If you live in a small apartment, chances are you’re constantly looking for ways to save space. Hopefully you’ve now realized that there are a number of products and ideas that can make small apartments feel bigger, and more comfortable.
